Casa Turquesa

Paraty , RJ, Brazil

The restored mansion has 9 suites with unparalleled views of the city and the mansion’s courtyard. The entrance of the house faces the city’s port and is right opposite the fish market. Enter the hotel through its replica colonial doors crafted in local wood and painted in turquoise blue. The mansion is a fine example of the historical colonial architecture and the whole construction – built on the promenade – is typical of the city to avoid infiltration in the structure of the house from the seawater during flooding. The flooding can actually be seen from the front doors of the hotel as well as from the balconies on the back of the house – an event visitors look forward to experiencing.

The 18th-century mansion opened its doors as a hotel in 2008, after a complete restoration that reconstructed the original house that was burned down during a fire in the early 1970s. Renato Tavolaro an architect specialized in colonial housing signed the project.
Creating a spacious hotel with an intimate atmosphere was a concept that would be challenging but worthwhile investing in.

The hotel has 9 luxurious suites and showcases many original features such as the stone and whale oil walls, a feature typical of colonial Brazil, and presents the rooms in elevated colour hues of blues, golden yellows and whites.

The well-decorated rooms match the natural elements of the wooden floors and stones, in tune with the exoticism of tropical gardens bursting with leafy fruit trees, orchids and bamboos.
In the bedrooms, divided into master and luxury categories, one can find the finest bed linen in pristine white by Brazilian luxury brand Trussardi.

With room décor details in colours that give the house its unique identity and makes each bedroom singular in its decoration and ambience. A bespoke feature is our exclusively designed mosquito nets – typical of the tropics – made by artisans from south Bahia, northeast Brazil. The rooms also count with paintings and artworks from local and international artists. There are 2 suites at the front of house and 7 in the back section of the mansion – all affording views of the beautiful streets, rooftops and painterly Paraty sky.

Guests can also count with charming straw hats and bags in local fisherman’s style, crafted by the famous weavers of the Sleepy Beach area in Paraty; flipflops by Brazilian brand Havaianas; wellie boots for the rainy and flooding season and beach towels for the boat trips at their disposal. The rooms are prepared to suit the guest’s agenda – there is nothing more satisfying than arriving back from a day of adventures in the region to find your bed laid, acclimatised ambience, the mosquito net ready for the evening and a little note by the bedside to wish you a good night’s sleep.

Every single detail is thought carefully to embrace a bespoke experience.
Our role as entrepreneurs of sustainable and positive luxury practices is reflected in all the choices we make as hoteliers. We work with independent local producers when possible – local fisherman and farmers deliver fresh seasonal produce that is in tune with the best sustainable ethics. Our toiletries’ range is supplied by Brazilian brands Natura and Granado – both renowned for their organic sourcing and sustainable & no-animal testing practices. With an intuitive management approach, we coach local personnel, contributing to local professional development and economic collaborative growth.

The hotel itself was built using rigorously sourced managed wood and the architectural concept was conceived to make use of the great natural assets of the region like the constant sea breeze that cools down all areas of the mansion, inspiring our guests to use less air conditioning in their suites.
